Potassium testing is frequently ordered, along with other electrolytes, as part of a routine physical. It is used to detect concentrations that are too high (hyperkalemia) or too low (hypokalemia). Increased potassium levels indicate hyperkalemia and decreased levels indicate hypokalemia.
